The Inland Port is also known as an Intermodal Logistics Center, or ILC. These ILCs are fast becoming the most efficient method of transporting increasing amounts of freight due to the growing reliance on imports and exports in the global economy.
The Port of Jacksonville is the 3rd largest in Florida, and moved more than seven million tons of cargo in the last year. This is likely to increase due to the expansion of the Panama Canal, to be completed in 2014.
Columbia County is in an ideal location to take advantage of this expected increase in cargo tonnage with the construction of an ILC. The proximity to I-10 and I-75, two railroads (CSX and Norfolk Southern) and an airport will benefit any company that requires freight shipment. The proximity of these strategic resources positions Columbia County as the ideal location for freight transit in all directions, via a variety of methods.

The possibility that cargo moving through Jacksonville’s port could go up the highway — and rail lines — to neighboring counties brought officials from across the region to Jacksonville for a meeting about creating a united front in lobbying for federal dollars.
